A pneumatic butterfly valve works by using pressurized air or gas to control the position of a disc ( or butterfly ) within the valve body. The disc rotates against the direction of flow because it is fixed to a shaft that passes through the valve's center. By turning the disc 90 degrees from its fully closed to fully open state, or vice versa, the pneumatic actuator opens or closes the valve in response to a signal, usually pneumatic pressure. This rotational motion regulates the fluid flow via the valve.
They work well in low-pressure conditions, and they do carry quite large volumes of liquids, gases, as well as liquids carrying suspended particles.
