How to precharge the inverters in a large storage system?

In high-power inverters, large capacitors are typically included. Each time the system is started, these capacitors must be precharged so that their voltage matches the voltage of the battery to which they will be connected.

In high-power inverters, large capacitors are typically included. Each time the system is started, these capacitors must be precharged so that their voltage matches the voltage of the battery to which they will be connected.

In this example, the system includes six Victron Quattro 15kVA inverters. To enable precharging, a 3kVA Multiplus-II on the right side of the photo plays a key role. The following are the operational steps:

1: Start the Multiplus, and through the large busbar shown in the middle of the photo, precharge the six 15kVA Quattro inverters connected to it (with the inverters turned off at this point).

2: After approximately 2 minutes, the precharge is complete, and the voltage measured between the positive and negative terminals on the busbar is about 55V. Turn on the Quattro inverters one by one, from left to right.

3: Turn on all the battery power switches, connecting all batteries to the system (32 Pytes 48100R C16 batteries).

4: The precharging process is complete.
