Motor Grader vs. Bulldozer: Which is Better for Road Work?

A comparison of motor grader and bulldozer which equipment is suitable for road work. Can you employ both pieces of equipment or use one for multiple tasks?

In the construction industry, every piece of equipment plays a crucial part in the construction process. Since the development and infrastructure programs are rapidly increasing it requires robust machinery to fulfil the requirements. However, when it comes to road construction motor graders and bulldozers are the machines that are employed across the world. Nonetheless, sometimes it is a bit confusing which machine one should employ for such tasks. Both the motor grader and bulldozer are robust equipment and provide state-of-the-art work in road and highway construction.

Bulldozers and motor grader are somewhat different but can perform similar work and have their own specific areas of expertise. Have you ever thought about which equipment is more suitable for road work? From which machine you can get productive work and yield much profitability.

Well, if the contractor has experience in the industry and knows how to utilize these machines they can get productive work from both equipment. However, it mostly depends on the project requirement and scale of it. That's why we are here to determine which machine is better at roadwork.

Motor Graders

Now let us begin with what they refer to as the motor grader but is commonly called the road grader. Such machines are made in a way that they are used for accurate work. A motor grader has a long, extendable blade that is used to level and smoothen parking areas among other places. It is usually utilized in fine grading, working slopes, and preparing crown surfaces of roads to allow sufficient water shedding. Some graders can also have attachments such as ditching, snow plowing, or scarifying.

Bulldozers

Bulldozers are large-capacity constructed vehicles with a wide, straight blade mounted ahead of the machine. Their primary action is to exert force to cause the movement of large volumes of soil, rocks, or debris. Bulldozers are well suited for heavy earth moving operations; land clearing; and rough grading due to their strong engines and well-built structure.

When to Use a Motor Grader

Due to the accuracy motor graders can offer, primarily, they are used in fine grading activities which require a higher level of accuracy. They are more efficient when used in the last stage of construction of roads where leveling of the surface creates a secure and resilient roadway. Also, these machines are intended for building slopes and crowns that are necessary for proper water drainage that can harm the road surface.

Modern Motor Graders

Modern motor graders also look very versatile and are often equipped with GPS and smart systems.  For accurate work, they can be equipped with different attachments suitable for particular tasks such as scarification or even spreading the materials. Motor graders also excel at economically efficient traveling when they are only required to do great lengths of flat pavement.

Due to their efficiency in providing even and smooth surfaces, they are often used on projects such as constructing highways or sealing roads, hygiene during the construction process is emphasized in combination with the work’s rapid progress.

When to Use a Bulldozer

Nothing can compare with the bulldozer in the toughness and capacity for shuffling and moving large amounts of materials and this makes the machines essential and unavoidable, especially in the initial stages of road construction. As such, their design makes them well suitable for uses such as clearing land bars, eradicating trees, and rocks as well and undertaking massive tasks of moving earth. Even though they are not as accurate as motor graders, bulldozers are efficient in rough grading, rapid consolidation, rough leveling, and other preparatory works prior to accurate grading.

Another practical aspect is their endurance on difficult terrains: bulldozers, unlike other vehicles, can climb steep grades, and get through slippery or rocky ground without losing stability. Besides, due to their high power, and robust structures for blades’ construction, they are optimal options for intense loads’ driving over short distances, while guaranteeing effectiveness in any extreme conditions.

Which is Better for Road Work?

Selecting the heavy equipment depends on the construction project. There are specifications and various applications of the machine, you can utilize them according to your project.

Use a Motor Grader

A motor grader is suitable for every project if you intend to have the best grading and leveling work done. It is most suitable in the final stages of construction such as when constructing or resurfacing a road to be level. If drainage is important, as it often is, the operator can use the motor grader effectively to build up crowns and side slopes where stormwater will be shed away from the roadway. They are also the best bet especially where a project involves large distances such as a road where consistency and accuracy are paramount to creating quality outcomes.

Use a Bulldozer

Since a bulldozer is a powerful piece of equipment it can be widely used when working on land that has to be cleared, or moving large quantities of material. It is most useful when grounds are being prepared for roads before construction and other structures are to be put in place. Using the versatility button a bulldozer is capable of dealing with harsh land, and steep or challenging land conditions. Besides, it is used for rough grading operations where speed is considered over precision since it will complete operations quickly.

Can You Use Both? Absolutely!

Motor graders and bulldozers are used interchangeably in many road construction operations as will be observed later on. For instance, a bulldozer can be utilized to clear the site and do minor grading. Once a particular section of land is leveled, a motor grader is able to give it the required surface appropriate for the construction of the road course and surface.

As to the use of both machines in production, they both bring efficiency and quality closer to one another. While bulldozers are the big movers, motor graders work on getting the details right, which is why the two are ideal partners for the construction of roads.
