Though formerly consistent, golf clothing today reflects constantly changing meaning. Hoodies are a fashion trend that has been well-liked yet sluggish enough to reach golf. Seen on runways and in fashion magazines, it's a standard praised for being ultra-comfortable, adaptable, and a fantastic approach to injecting some warmth. Outfits will eventually become more casual and less khaki as golfers become more fitness-conscious and golf clothing companies create more fashion-forward designs. But is the hooded sweater ready for golf? We polled four Golf Digest editors for their opinions; the outcomes varied from "I wore one this weekend" to "Golf, as a reflection on our better selves, cannot peacefully coexist with Golf Hoodie."

May I wear a hoodie on the golf course?

Whether or not you can wear a hoodie on the golf course depends on the particular course. The golf clubs establish dress rules; hence, what is allowed at one club cannot be permitted at another.

Hoodies carried societal stigma connected to how the hoods might cover the head and hide facial characteristics. As banks forbade individuals from wearing motorcycle helmets, certain shopping malls prohibited hoodie wearers from entering. 

At times in history, golf apparel has closely reflected daily wear; at other times, it has sharply differed from it. Imagine those images of early players on the greens donning ties and tweed jackets. Looking over pictures for a story on the best amateur golfers, it was amazing how the early female champions dressed in daily clothes, even down to their shoes. Then there are times, like the 70s, when golfing style differs from daily wear. It was still the age of men in black suits going to work in offices, and it seemed, deliberately or not, golfers were going to dress for a day off on days away from the office.
