Runes are the in-game currency you need to level up, buy gear, and advance in your game. They act both as currency and experience points; upon death they become accessible again by returning to the area where they died in order to reclaim them.
The Palace Approach Ledge-Road in Altus Plateau is an excellent location to acquire runes without risking death, using this guide will quickly make a lot of money!
What are runes?
Many shardbearer bosses in Elden Ring will drop Great Runes, special items which provide powerful yet limited buffs for players. To activate these buffs, however, players must visit a specific Divine Tower that bears this Great Rune's blessing and find its benediction tower to do battle against that particular Great Rune.
As in other FromSoftware games, any elden ring runes owned by players upon death will be lost - unlike dungeon boss fights where any runes used instantly reappear at evergaol entrances, where it would otherwise be retrievable upon returning back to death location - however players must return there in order to retrieve lost runes.
Elder Futhark runes represent letters of the alphabet, while also holding symbolic meanings rooted in ancient Nordic mythology. Fehu is said to represent cattle; Uruz symbolizes strength; Thurisaz represents giants etc. Additionally, rune symbols differ depending on whether they're voiced (f,j) or voiceless (j,w). Each rune holds unique spiritual significance.
How do I get runes?
By defeating most major bosses in Elden Ring, you will gain one or more Great Runes; these powerful artifacts provide significant (albeit limited) buffs. These Great Runes can be powered up using Rune Arcs that drop from the shardbearer bosses themselves or purchased from Twin Maiden Husks.
These arcs can be recharged at any Site of Grace and used by players to level up characters or reallocate attribute points (see Leveling for more on this). Runes are essential in progressing through the game as enemies drop fewer than they should and lose them upon death.
Outshout the Site of Grace, there are multiple other excellent rune farms to consider in both early and mid game. One such spot is Windmill Village, featuring its signature Midsommar ambiance replete with dancing villagers that remain unaware of your presence despite your best attempts at killing them - this farming spot can produce over 3,000 runes within three minutes, enough for powering up a Great Rune and reaping its benefits.
How do I use runes?
Great elden ring runes are a new addition to Elden Ring that allow players to gain significant advantages for each life they use them for. Shardbearer bosses drop them, and activation must occur at Divine Towers connected with their demi-god of origin.
Runes in this game act similar to souls found in previous FromSoftware titles; they can be used to upgrade player stats. Unlike souls, however, runes can be reallocated at Sites of Grace should a player die.
Early on, players can purchase a Golden Scarab Talisman that increases rune rewards by 20%; however, most rune arcs can only be obtained by killing monsters and bosses. There are plenty of effective methods available for farming Arcs efficiently within the game; aside from obvious places like Godrick at Stormveil Castle or Finger Reader Enia at Roundtable Hold, most item sellers and merchants sell them at an economical rate; additionally NPCs who do not belong to any major boss can also sell Rune Arcs at reasonable rates!
How do I get more runes?
Elden Ring offers several ways for players to earn money besides killing enemies and bosses - the primary one being runes, which can also be used for levelling up your character and upgrading weapons - but you will have to collect many before using any for these purposes.
PC Gamer suggests there are easy ways to gain more runes without engaging any enemies directly. As they state, there are certain areas within the game which provide large quantities of runes with minimal effort required on your part.
Early on in the game, visit Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace and shoot an arrow at the large bird at the far end of cliffside to receive over 2,000 runes as rewards - repeat this action to add up more money quickly!
An easy and fast way to earn runes quickly is to attack and defeat red Albinaurics who patrol around Mohgwhyn's Palace. They can be killed on any level, and when defeated will drop a lot of runes - even from lowly levels!
