I Thought It Was Just Heartburn—Until It Wasn’t

Persistent heartburn isn’t just discomfort—it could be a sign of GERD. Camellia Wulansari shares her personal journey with acid reflux and how simple lifestyle changes made all the difference.

For years, I brushed off that burning sensation in my chest after a late-night snack or a spicy dinner. I chalked it up to “just heartburn” and kept moving. A few antacids here and there, and I thought I had it under control.

But then things started to change.

The discomfort began showing up more frequently—after coffee in the morning, after a simple bowl of pasta, sometimes even while I was sleeping. I’d wake up in the middle of the night with my throat burning and my chest tight. I knew something wasn’t right.

That’s when I started digging deeper and discovered something many people don’t realize: persistent heartburn isn’t something to ignore. It could be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and left untreated, it can lead to more serious issues—like esophagitis, ulcers, or even an increased risk of esophageal cancer.

Sounds scary, right? But here’s the good news: once I took my symptoms seriously and began making intentional lifestyle changes, things got better—so much better.

Here’s what helped me manage my reflux naturally:

  1. I started eating slower. Chewing more and rushing less made a surprising difference.
  2. I swapped late-night meals for earlier dinners and added a short evening walk.
  3. I cut back on trigger foods—coffee (hard!), spicy dishes (ouch!), and anything fried.
  4. I elevated my bed by about six inches to prevent nighttime reflux.
  5. And maybe most importantly, I finally listened to my body instead of silencing it.

I also began writing about my journey and connecting with others who felt the same frustrations I did. That’s what led me to become a health writer, helping readers like you understand that digestive issues aren’t just in your head—they’re real, and manageable, once you know what’s going on.

If any of this feels familiar, I want you to know you’re not alone. Acid reflux is incredibly common, but it doesn’t have to control your life.
