Education and Training
High School Preparation To start, you’ll need a solid foundation in science and mathematics during your high school years. Focus on courses like biology, physics, and chemistry, as well as algebra and geometry.
Post-Secondary Education Next, you’ll need to complete a post-secondary education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). There are three main options: a. Certificate Program (1-2 years) b. Associate Degree Program (2 years) c. Bachelor’s Degree Program (4 years)
Clinical Experience Most programs include hands-on clinical experience, which is essential for developing the skills needed to perform sonographic examinations.
Certification
While not always required, obtaining certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) can improve your job prospects and earning potential. To become certified, you must pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination, as well as a specialty examination in your chosen field, such as abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology, or vascular sonography.

Job Outlook and Wages
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is projected to grow 17% between 2020 and 2030, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is due to an aging population and increased demand for diagnostic imaging services.
